I predicted that the Texas Rangers would win the World Series in six games over the St. Louis Cardinals, and for seven innings last night it looked like I was finally going to get one right. Well, I was wrong, and happy to be wrong. I know interest in the Fall Classic is down, and here in the New York-Metro area any Yankee or Met free Series generally gets a yawn, and that's a real shame. This has been a fun Series; sloppy at times, yes, but always engaging, with surprises to spare. After game five I though that this had the chance to be one of those special World Series, like the Reds-Red Sox in 1975, the Mets-Red Sox in '86, the Twins-Braves in '91 or the D'Back-Yankees in 2001. But it had to go seven to match up with those legendary Classics, and so it has.
I make no predictions because in Game 7 anything can happen and it usually does. But to echo the guys from ESPN's Baseball Tonight, much will depend on the state of the Ranger bullpen. Ron Washington was trying to win it last night, which you can understand, but he used a lot of pitchers who threw a ton of pitches. So sit back, relax and enjoy the fun. There is nothing quite like a Game 7.
